The Power of 1% (it's not about the fee)
Published: 13/11/2020 By Mark TewThere are 1000’s of leadership and self-improvement books, each propose to transform your life, professional achievement or the success of your business, you may have read a few of them. Some focus on re-setting expectations and establishing goals, others on adopting the practices and habits of high achievers. Many have a sports performance message where small changes can be the difference between failure and Gold.
A great example that you may be familiar with is how the GB Olympic cycling team went from zero competition wins to global domination in just 5 years. In 2003, Dave Brailsford was appointed Performance Director and immediately implemented a programme he called the aggregation of marginal gains. This approach examined each and every element that contributed to a human riding a bicycle at a certain speed over a certain distance; the equipment, the athlete and their personal fitness, dietary and lifestyle factors, muscle recovery techniques and even sleep optimization.
Brailsford and his team identified 100’s of small enhancements that, when aggregated, improved performance levels that won the team 2 gold medals at the 2004 Olympics (the first since 1908), 60% of the cycling Golds in Beijing 2008 and similar success in London 2012.
This philosophy of marginal gains can be applied in any situation with guaranteed results as many small improvements will show larger collective positive change over time. In business this may be committing to making regular small improvements in sales, marketing, customer support, communications, training & development and how technology supports the business. Having the ability to measure these improvements and the results is obviously crucial, as is the commitment to sustain this approach over the long-term to achieve your competitive advantage objectives; a higher Google ranking, increased leads, market share, improved reputation and greater cost and time efficiency.
