Going Mobile; are you prepared for 2012?

A recent study by the BBC found that almost half of UK internet users are going online via a mobile device.  The growth in the mobile market has been rapid. Since Apple’s release of the iPhone in 2007, the mobile phone has become a key tool for internet browsing. No longer is internet use reserved for the home or the office, it is accessible at anytime and virtually anywhere.

It’s not just the change in casual internet browsing which has brought about the rise of internet use via mobile devices. The increase in people accessing emails through their smart phone means many users will view property alerts and subsequently property details via their mobile. In addition, the mobile app market has grown substantially; 1.3million people have downloaded the Rightmove property portal app alone, increasing the chances of a portal referral via a mobile device.

Smart phones have become a part of everyday life, whether they be Apple or Android, Google or Galaxy, the rise of the smart phone has meant that internet use via mobile devices is only going to go one way throughout 2012; up.

So what does this mean for estate agents across the UK? How will this changing shift in internet browsing affect the way that businesses operate in 2012?

The need for a mobile version of your website has never been greater. There are so many variables between your average computer and a mobile; screen dimensions, installed software, internet browser, with each one varying across different devices. A website needs to be specifically designed for mobile use to ensure every component of the site will be accessible to all visitors.  For example, flash components of a website will not display on an Apple iPhone. With Apple holding such a big market share, would you really want to exclude such a large proportion of people from being able to use your site?

The functionality and display of your website needs to be good for the user. The nature of a visit via a mobile device will mean that the user probably is viewing properties on the go, therefore time is of the essence. Landing on a site with poor functionality where the media is hard read will be off putting for the visitor. They will quickly stop using your site and move on to a more user friendly web page.

Getting a mobile version of your website needn’t mean a complete overhaul of your entire website. The mobile website will work in conjunction with your existing site. Mobile internet users will automatically be directed to the mobile version of your site, whilst computer users will continue to use your existing website.

In the time it’s taken you to read this article, you could have lost a potential client because your site wasn’t accessible to their mobile device.  So, if you’re looking for a new year’s resolution for 2012, then ensuring you have a fully functioning mobile site should be top of your list.

Facebook; the marketing Messiah or a very naughty boy?

The rise of Facebook has been rapid since its conception in 2004, and during 2009 expanded beyond the realms of social interaction to become a growing commercial force. Much has been lauded about the benefits of its use in business; 85% of companies use social media in recruitment, and it is estimated that 43% of social media users follow brands to hear about deals and special offers. However, the key question for property professionals is why is Facebook use right for them? Statistical analysis of fortune 500 companies is all very well, but it is the impact on the small independent agent that will be of more importance for property professionals.

The nature of social media has changed over the last few years. Whilst it’s true that in their infancy they were a method of connecting family and friends, they have developed into far more complex and far reaching networks with vast opportunities for business.

Many household brands are now using Facebook to attract followers and fans. You’ll notice that on the majority of adverts on television, companies will ask the viewers to find their Facebook page, and post links to their social networking sites rather than their website address. Companies are actively promoting their social networking pages over and above their company website, which is a huge shift in their behaviour. This shift is for two fundamental reasons.

Firstly, word of mouth advertising has always been a powerful tool; an opinion from a trusted source is worth infinitely more than an advertisement. Generating a “like” on Facebook will instantly communicate this action to all of that person’s friends and family online who in turn could further recommend your brand. The exponential growth nature of social media can mean a recommendation is soon communicated to thousands of people, any of whom could be a potential client.

A person visiting your website is a single, independent act, that whilst useful, will not generate the same level of recommendation and engagement as social media sites can. A person can visit your site, find the information they need and move on, but who else know about this person’s behaviour? With Facebook, a visit to your page is instantly communicated to hundreds of their friends through the newsfeed. It’s the equivalent of a person visiting your website, then emailing a recommendation to their entire contact list. It’s the reason a YouTube video posted on Facebook can generate millions of hits in a few days, whilst a website might struggle to generate traffic.

Secondly, generating a “like” on Facebook will give you key information about that person. Demographics, interests and contact details will be accessible to your business. In effect, Facebook will generate contact lists and potential customer avenues for you, without any need for you to collate this information for yourself.  Social networks are a social net, ensnaring vital information that you would otherwise spend hours trying to collect.

Of course, to maximise the potential of your Facebook activity will require input. You’ll need to drive visitors to your page, just as you would for your website. However, given the potential results for your business, combined with the fact that social networking is free, it’s an effort that’s worth investing in. Facebook isn’t a miracle worker on its own, but with a little input, it could certainly become a miracle of your own making.

Webdadi takes a leaf out of Steve Jobs' legacy

Steve Jobs did one thing brilliantly well so what was it?

Steve never actually invented new technology he just applied his simple philosophy and methods that were his hallmark of success from the beginning.
He made everything Apple easier for someone to buy and use. Steve made technology visually more appealing and easier to intereact with - he made content accessible, quick and easy, and he made all of it quick and easy to buy.
He added a mouse and windows to a PC to make it easy to use, easy to read what was on it, and easy setup and turn on.
It was the same success for the iPOD; Mp3 players were around for years. He made them look good, easy to use, easy to get great songs onto.

Steve didn't invent the tablet as we know, he re-invented it. He just applied his tried and tested philosophy..

Make it look fabulous, make it easy to buy, easy to setup up, easy to switch on, easy to use, easy to get content on, easy to read, listen and use that content.

The motto and moral of his story and his legacy is simply this..

Make whatever you create follow the philosophy above that he pioneered.

If your products look marvellous, are easy to buy, setup and switch on and interact with, if you make it really incredibly easy in your bit of technology to get a dirth of content onto it that is easy and lovely to use, listen to, read and use, then you're on the right track, if you don't you won't ever be number 1, period.

We have done this with Webdadi.
